The Last Supper (CSN Giveaway) **CLOSED**

I have a confession to make.

We have fallen into a terrible habit here at my house.

Now don’t judge me…this is difficult to share with all of you but <gulp> we enjoy most of our… o.k. almost ALL of our meals while sitting around our kitchen island rather than our kitchen table.

There I said it out loud.

Do you all sit at your kitchen tables like civilized families or do you crowd around your island like we do?

It’s really become quite ridiculous.

My husband and I sit sideways around the edges of the island while our daughters sit comfortably on their bar stools. I plan, shop for, and cook delish dishes but it feels like we don’t enjoy the fruits of my labor because we plow through meals. I try to think of charming and witty conversation to chit chat about while we enjoy supper around our…well…island. I have a perfect vision of what our evening suppers should be like. Ya know, like the Walton’s… all of us sitting down at our own special place to gather and feed our tummies as well as our souls.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to plop down at the kitchen table? It IS only but a few, mere steps away. I mean seriously folks.

Instead we squish haphazardly around the island, awkwardly contorted in the chairs that we’ve ironically pulled over from the kitchen table that sits, waiting. Waiting dutifully for someone to loving set each place setting on its’ spacious tabletop (rather than a catch-all for the piles of “to do” papers and my purse and car keys).

Well I’ve got breaking news…this will indeed be THE LAST SUPPER on the island at my house. The last supper to be eaten with one foot on the ground ready to vacate the premises at any given moment. The last supper spent uncomfortably crowded in a space that is meant for buffets and seasonal displays – not meals.

Therefore I give to you….

  1. Wenderly, we usually eat not at the dining room table but at the coffee table. This, despite having seating for 6 at our proper dining room. Go figure.

  2. I’m ashamed to admit we do not sit around the table, either. Maybe we should clear it off (like yours, it has become a catch-all) and sit around it.

  3. Well, we don’t have an island, so that solves that problem! 😉

We eat at the kitchen table, but we always say that we’ll eat in the dining room more often. I never happens!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  4. Sometimes we all sit at the table, most times my husband and I are at the table and our daughter is at the island (her choice), and even other times I am at the table, my daughter is at the island and my husband is in the family room!!

  5. I enjoy my meals seated at the table in my breakfast room. It provides a great view of my backyard and seems to bring about a peaceful calm while eating. Now, utilizing the formal dining room is a different story! Enjoy your meals away from the island!

BTW: LOVE the bowls–I snagged four (brand new) in July from Goodwill for $1.50 total!!

  6. I don’t have an island and I’m not sure if my table is technically a dining room table or a kitchen table – it’s all one big room! But… we only sit there when the kids (college age) are home. When it is just my husband and I, we are usually in the living room in front of the TV. Not by my choice. Sigh.

  7. We don’t have an island or bar–our kitchen is too small. So we do eat at the dining room table, mostly because there is nowhere else to eat! (I do have to move the piles of paper off most nights.) But it’s still a challenge keeping the kids (okay, mostly one kid) sitting down long enough to have those Walton-esque moments.

  8. When we are all home, we do actually sit at the kitchen table 🙂 But sadly the tv is usually on!

  9. My kids always want to eat at the living room coffee table with the TV, so we have a rule, that if we cook, we eat together in the dining room. If we pick up or just kind fend for ourselves (i.e. cereal, leftovers, sandwiches), everyone can eat wherever they want to!

  10. This is our family to a tee! 6ft away sits our table, lonely wondering where we are, maybe tonight’s the night!

  11. We’re doing so much better about almost always eating at the table these days. Sometimes we still find ourselves sitting in the living room – like pizza night… get cozy and comfy and that’s where it happens.

  12. We don’t have a kitchen table; We do have a dining room table, but we tend to only use it for holidays, Sunday dinners, and entertaining. My husband grew up with 2 working parents, so meals were haphazard-I succeeded in getting him to eat at the table for a while. We’ve moved several times-and didn’t always have our table with us-now everyone eats wherever.

  13. tonight we DID sit at the table! But I cannot guarantee that it will be a permanent change, there is just something so easy about that island – perhaps my favorite suburban invention!
No TV, NEVER at dinner at our house!

  14. We sometimes sit at our kitchen table, but never at our dining room table. At least you guys are having dinner together!!

  15. Island! I sit sideways with my husband and son at the spot where you can get your knees under. Not always are we there but more often than not:)

  16. Boy this would be great for their Le Creuset items! Don’t feel bad though. We never sit around our fancier table. Either it’s the corner table or the island but mostly the island since that counter is efficient 🙂

  17. Well, as a general rule we all sit at the table and not the island (we have 5 in our family and only 4 chairs at the island). But somedays 1 or 2 are missing at the table and some days we don’t have as much to say as I’d like so it’s definitely not perfect. But mostly we sit together and eat dinner (lunch and breakfast sometimes too).

    Great giveaway.

  18. Wenderly, my husband and I were just discussing this last evening – we’ve gotten into a terrible habit, too, of eating on TV trays in the living room. Nothing wrong with that now and then, but I really enjoy setting the table nice & sitting at the table to eat – when we’re in the LR with the TV on, we don’t talk (typical man) – sitting at the table, there are no distractions. I was just telling him we need to get back into that.

  19. We never sit at the kitchen table unless my mom is here to visit. I designed my kitchen island to accommodate the three of us for meals. I’d remove my kitchen table and replace it with overstuffed chairs and a coffee table if I could! And, no guilt here. I love my island!

  20. Yes my dear Wendy, much to my chagrin, The Professor and I don’t sit at our table very often; but we’re making efforts to do better. We find that those times we actually sit at the table for meals, we’re less likely to plow thru the plate and rush off to whatever the next big thing is. Kudos to you for taking a stand!!

  21. I live alone and always eat in my sitting room which houses the TV and the computer. Terrible habit. At my boyfriend’s house we eat in a similar area, though always when we have company we eat in the dining room. The dining table at my house is the very same one which I ate most meals at as I grew up and we were not allowed to miss dinner and I long for the times around that table with all my sibs and parents. great memories. There was always a cat or two under the table waiting, and sometimes a neighborhood dog!

  22. Yes, we always sit at the kitchen table to eat — except for weekends sometimes we eat out on the deck.

  23. Don’t feel bad, I think everyone does that! We don’t have a kitchen table or island, so we either eat at the dining room table or the coffee table in front of the TV! (Just me and the man, no kids.) However, I’ve known families who had a kitchen island or bar, kitchen/nook table, and formal dining room and they almost always ate at their island. As long as you’re eating nutritious food off of some sort of flat surface and you’re all sitting down together, you’re doing pretty well in my book!

  24. I hate to say it but we very rarely eat dinner at our table it’s ususally in the living room around the TV :0(

  25. sometimes the kitchen table and sometimes the dining room table. thank you for the opportunity.
