Caprese Salad Skewers With Heart Tomatoes

Caprese salad skewers are fresh and full of flavor and make a delicious start to any meal. The heart shaped tomato will add that special touch to any occasion.

Caprese Salad Skewers Salad With Heart Tomatoes

We devour caprese salad at our house. The bright colors match the taste of the bright flavors and who doesn’t love to eat with their eyes first? This year for Valentine’s Day we decided to dine out, but I decided to have a sweet little appetizer ready, just for the two of us, to enjoy before hitting the town. A caprese salad skewer is the perfect way to get those taste buds awake and ready for the next course. To make it extra special for my Valentine, I cut the tomatoes to make a heart shape. You’ll never believe how simple it is!

Caprese Salad Skewers With Heart Tomatoes

First, you’ll need grape tomatoes, not cherry tomatoes. The oblong shape of the grape tomato is necessary to pull off the heart effect.

After you’ve washed and dried the tomatoes, simply cut them in half at an angle, invert the two sides and you’ll see the heart shape appear!!

Caprese Salad Skewers With Heart Tomatoes

Add a fresh basil leaf, a small mozzarella ball and drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and you’ve got yourself a caprese salad skewer that’s ready for any celebratory event! So whether it’s Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, birthday or just because you love someone, tickle their fancy with a caprese salad skewer with a heart tomato!

Wishing you & yours a delicious Valentine’s Day!

Homemade Valentine Gifts Flower Pens

You may be thinking, “what a beautiful bouquet of flowers sitting quietly in an antique sugar bowl” as you gaze upon the above photo. But is it, really? Nope! It’s not! It’s a beautiful antique sugar bowl filled with a bouquet of flower pens! If you’re looking for a unique homemade Valentine gift, then you’ve come to the right place! Flower pens are such fun! So easily personalized by the pen you use and what type (or types) of flower you choose.

Homemade Valentine Gifts Flower Pens

You’ll only need a couple supplies and less than 5 minutes to make this sweet gift.

  • a pen (or pens)
  • artificial flowers
  • floral tape
  • wire cutters

I found these pretty peonies at the dollar store but you can find an even larger selection of artificial flowers as well as the floral tape, at a local craft store.

Homemade Valentine Gifts Flower Pens

Here’s what you do ::

  • Simply cut a flower with wire cutters leaving about a 4 inch stem
  • hold the stem against the top of the pen, then gently pull the floral tape to release its sticky texture while wrapping it around the stem
  • continue to wrap (while gently pulling the tape) until the entire pen is covered in the floral tape
  • tear off the tape once you get to the tip and press the edge down for a smooth finish

Homemade Valentine Gifts Flower Pens

Viola! You’ve got yourself a flower pen. Isn’t it sweet?

Homemade Valentine Gifts Flower Pens

A bouquet of pens arranged in a fetching vessel makes a gorgeous gift for Valentine’s Day or even a birthday or Mother’s Day. Treat someone special to a beautiful homemade flower pen. It’s nearly impossible to use one without a smile on your face.

Cherry Heart Hand Pies

Cherry heart hand pies are as delicious as they are darling. They’re an easy and impressive, sweet treat for those you love.

Cherry Heart Hand Pies

Why is it that hand pies always seem to steal my heart? I just adore their sweet little individual disposition. Their playful rustic look paired with the idea of an afternoon spent humming in the kitchen whilst making homemade hand pies makes me smile. But guess what? Don’t tell anyone, but these little beauties aren’t made from scratch.

Cherry Heart Hand Pies

They were put together with a readymade pie crust and a canned filling. Special heart felt sentiments don’t always have to take hours to prepare. The minutes I spent assembling the hand pies don’t really matter when I see the glowing faces of my sweethearts as they relish in their confection. And trust me, nobody ever asks me, as they gleefully savor every gooey sweet bite, how many hours I’ve spent slaving in the kitchen.

Cherry Heart Hand Pies

And as for me? Oh I’m happily humming in the kitchen. But rather than cleaning up a big mess, I get to relish in the moments I’ve still got with my beautiful teenage daughters as they sit at my island happily chatting away over their tasty treat.

I guess it’s not really the hand pies that steal my heart. But rather who eats them that does. My heart spilleth over.

Wishing you and yours the sweetest Valentine’s Day ever!

Devil’s Food Cake Whoopie Pie

Devil’s food cake whoopie pies are a delicious way to show friends and family how much you love them this Valentine’s Day or any day!

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

For as long as I can remember, the week leading up to Valentine’s Day at my house has been filled with shoe boxes, bright colored construction paper, glitter, glue, handmade cards and hours of imagination and creation.

Elementary school is now but a fleeting memory and I must admit that I’m handling it, {sniff} quite, {sob}  well. My girls have blossomed into beautiful young ladies who are now getting ready to move onto high school and (I can’t believe that I’m typing these words) spend weekends visiting colleges. How is that possible?

So the other day while I was shopping at my beloved Target, hurriedly rushing through the isles, I just may have taken a wrong turn and ended up in the Valentine section. Within moments I was surrounded by hundreds of happily chattering mothers holding the hands of rosy cheeked children who where gleefully picking and choosing the perfect Valentine’s Day cards to fill their beautifully decorated boxes… that they had just finished making at home with bright colored construction paper, glitter and glue. I swear that I could hear the music from Little House on the Prairie in the background, making it all the more traumatic to realize that I had a cart full of toilet paper and cleaning supplies, rather than my sweet little chubby cheeked cherubs eating popcorn and slurping a slushy. It was at that moment, through my tear filled eyes, that I spotted the devil’s food cake mix and I knew what I had to do. I must admit that I felt a bit torn about my initial intentions. For a split second I considered whipping up the batch of devil’s food cake to eat my sorrows away.

But then I remembered my heart shaped whoopie pie pan  and I envisioned my not-so-little-anymore darlings digging into each chocolate whoopie pie with a little girl glee. My mouth turned up into a Grinch-like grin I knew with certainty that, “I have to make heart whoopie pies for my girls!”. I’m still not certain if I said it out loud or in my head, and I don’t really remember driving home come to think of it. But what I do know is, once I stepped into the quite solitude of my kitchen,

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

and began the simple process of making a boxed recipe with some of my favorite kitchen staples,

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

my heavy heart was enlightened.

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

I became calm and relaxed and enveloped in the sweet bliss of baking.

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

Baking something for the people that I love and cherish,

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

even though they have the audacity to blossom and mature into beautiful young ladies.

Beautiful young ladies who relished in the whoopie pies while entertaining me with their wit and humorous stories about their day. This time I had tears of laughter filling my eyes and I was grateful for who my daughters have become.

Devils Food Cake Whoopie Pie

My heart soared and I just wanted to shout “whoooooopppieeeeeeee!” But I didn’t, because that would be weird. Not to mention, my two sweet young ladies would be the first to point that out to me and I just wanted to relish in the moment.

Here’s another decadent chocolatey Valentine’s Day treat ::

Wishing you a delightful Valentine’s Day full of lots of lighthearted whooooooppppieeeee!

Melt Someone’s Heart With Crayons

Who doesn’t just love a new box of crayons and all of the promise that it holds? A fresh box makes my heart go a-pitter-pat. The creative possibilities are absolutely endless! Well, I ask you,  what does one do with all of the tattered and battered used little pieces once all of the creativity is done?

You make heart crayons of course!

Aren’t they precious? And they’re the perfect DIY gift for Valentine’s Day! Simple, creative, easy and fun! I just made them at work with the kiddos I supervise in the after school program and I knew that I had to share them with you! I snapped a few quick photos on my phone of the simple process…

First, peel the paper off of the crayons and then break the crayons into small pieces. Next, place the pieces into a non-stick, heart shaped pan (making sure not to over stuff) and bake in a pre-heated 350° oven.

Watch closely as the crayons melt (3-5 minutes depending on your oven) as soon as you see that they have completely melted,

carefully take the cookie sheet out of the oven and place on a flat surface in your freezer.

(Note: the metallic crayons didn’t melt, next time we’ll skip those colors.)

After about 5-7 minutes in the freezer they’ll be firm and ready to go!

Tah-daaaaaaa…

Wasn’t that easy?

I just can’t think of a cuter way to say Happy Valentine’s Day.

A heart felt gift that will make anyone’s heart melt.

xoxoxo-

Cocoa Rice Crispy & Nutella Heart Sandwiches

These delicious and chocolatey cocoa rice crispy & nutella heart sandwiches will melt anyone’s heart.

I whipped up the sweetest chocolatey treat this past weekend! I know that Valentine’s day is tomorrow but I just had to share this with all of you! These are the perfect last minute sweet treat for Valentine’s Day! This is all you have to do to make these darling heart sandwiches for those you love any day of the year!

Just mix some cocoa crispy rice cereal with some marshmallow creme (that has been warmed first in the microwave) and spread it on a rimmed cookie sheet lined with a silpat mat. To ensure that the mixture sets with a nice flat suface, just cover the mixture with some wax paper and rolled over it with a rolling pin. It works like a charm!

After 30 minutes press a heart shape cookie cutter into the the sweet crunchy mixture…

And out pop it out on a plate.

It’s perfect just like that, dontcha think?

But no, don’t stop there.

Go ahead and slather the heart with a generous amount of Nutella®.

*Swoon*

Then top it with another rice crispy heart to make the most adorable (not to mention sweetest) heart sandwich ever.

And then don’t stop there. Cut-pop-out-slather-eat-repeat to your heart’s content.

And then make another batch for those you love.

Sending YOU lots of love this Valentine’s Day and each day all the year through.

Heart Felt

As I was taking a picture of this little red felt heart, it hit me.

It hit me of how blessed I am to have fallen into this wonderful world of blogging.

I am deeply, desperately and hopelessly in love with it.

I love the creative outlet that it has given me. I adore the community of bloggers who have grown into friends who are such an inspiration, so supportive and who have hearts not of red felt but gold.

I adore that I get to share a deeper part of myself with my family in a way that I’ve never been able to. I am able to weave emotions into words and take pictures of my thoughts. It is so heartwarming to hear the excitement in their voices when they read something that really resonates within their soul. It’s a totally new way for me to show my love for each and every one of them. I love you all so very much.

And I am so blessed to have all of you…

You who take the time to stop by and read what I have to say to begin with. I am so very grateful when you take the time to leave a comment. I actually feel dizzy with glee each time I read that one of you want to try something that I’ve shared.

That’s what my blog is all about.

It’s about sharing, inspiring and embracing all that life has to offer. Life’s to short not to enjoy the ride. Whether it’s through food or decorating or just stopping all the craziness to enjoy a tender moment.

And that’s what just happened to me.

This little red felt heart made me stop and enjoy the moment.

And I just had to share what my heart felt.

Thanks to all of you.

Happy Valentine’s Day with love,

Wenderly
