There’s something mystical that happens this time of year. Just when I think that the doom and gloom of winter will never, ever, end…the daffodils magically appear. It always amazes me to see their tender green stems pushing up through the hard cold ground, seemingly unaware of their bright and cheery beauty. They don’t even seem to notice how ugly everything is around them, they just bloom and dance happily in the cold brisk wind.
Wish I could be more like that. Keep a sunny disposition in any situation.
The other day as I was arranging some bouquets of daffodils to sprinkle around my house as little reminders of cheer, memories flooded back and I could hear my Grandmother reading this poem to me as she would so many times when I was a child. Perhaps it’s why I love daffodils so. Thought I’d share it with all of you.
DAFFODILS
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd –
A host of golden daffodils
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I, at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed – and gazed – but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
~William Wordsworth
As I fill my house with the bright and cheery beauty of the unassuming daffodils, I can’t help but to feel my heart fill up as well. And despite the lingering cold and gray, I find myself dancing with the daffodils.

love this!!!
Beautiful. In so many ways. 🙂
Spring can’t be far behind if there are daffodils.
Thank you, I am now going to the florist to get some daffys!
Beautiful! I can’t wait for spring bulbs. The kids said they saw a couple barely popping up out back last night.
That is so beautiful. I love it. And am looking forward to seeing mine pop through!
How beautiful! I feel similar about the Tulips here in Skagit Valley, Washington. They are a sight to behold!
Daffodils are one of my favorite flowers. My dad plants thousands of bulbs in our backyard along the creek. Every year I looked forward to seeing that sea of sunshine in the spring. I don’t live at home anymore, but he still sends me photos. I smile every time I see a daffodil and think of my dad. Thanks for making me smile today.
Ah, love this. Thank you.
Such a sweet and uplifting post! I have a vase full of daffodils in my house right now that my mom gave me the other day, and every time I walk by them they make me smile.
So sweet and lovely! Makes me want to run out and plant daffodils in our yard!
What a beautiful post. The poem is lovely, I can definitely see why you love daffodils. They seem so uplifting with their remarkably vibrant colors. 🙂
Oh how I’m right there with ya sweet friend. So ready for a change in colors and attitude. Not so much ready for short sleeves, but I’ll deal.
What a lovely poem darlin’ !! I know exactly what you men, spring makes me feel giddy inside and just bursting with joy 🙂
Our tulips and daffodils are coming up as well – love staring at the bulbs with the kiddos.
I love daffodils (that and tulips!). They are the first flowers I buy when I want to bring some spring into my home. Thanks for the cheery and bright post!
Simply lovely, Wendy!
We noticed that the shoots of our daffodils and tulips are just breaking through the ground. The realization that they will grace our garden in a few weeks makes me feel elated! Wonderful post, Wendy.
What a beautiful post! I’m still awaiting the first sign of new life on our property but Spring always holds the promise of new beginnings and it never lets us down 🙂
